| The Design and
Technology Department is part of the Technology and Enterprise Learning
Area. It comprises a range of different subjects offering students the
option of specialising in an area of interest as they progress through
school. All Year 8 students study Design and Technology for a semester
and it becomes optional in Years 9 and 10 depending on the interest of
the student. Subjects available in lower school Design and Technology
are:
LOWER SCHOOL
Year 8
Design Technology
This semester course is an exciting and satisfying program of learning
which develops creativity in technical graphics and the production of
projects in the wood and metal workshops. Projects will concentrate on
students learning the basic skills of manipulating both wood and metal.
Students are introduced to the safe use of machines and power tools when
working with wood and metal. Students will also learn the basic principles
of design through a variety of projects.
Year 9
Metal Technology
Working with Wood
Photography
Electronics
Metal Technology
In this course students develop competence in the use of metalworking
hand tools, safe work practises and procedures associated equipment and
reading simple workshop drawings. New skills and procedures may include;
Spot welding
Bending
Manipulating sheet metal
Lathe work
Silver soldering
Brazing
Use of Oxy-Acetylene equipment and more
Outcomes in this course will be achieved through students completing
a variety of design projects.
Working with Wood
This course provides students with the opportunity to expand their process
skills and knowledge using wood as a material. Emphasis is on skilling
and task setting through the safe use of machines, power tools, hand tools
and various common materials. Outcomes are achieved by students designing
and making a variety of attractive and useful projects throughout the
year.
Year 10
Metalwork
Woodwork
Photography
Electronics
Metalwork
In this course students will continue to develop their hand skills and
techniques with more detailed assembly projects. More specifically they
will develop their skills in the use of metalworking hand tools, safe
work procedures with power tools and associated equipment and reading
more detailed drawings. There is greater emphasis on the use of lathe
and milling machines, with MIG and fusion welding being introduced in
this course.
Woodwork
Students will extend their manipulative and process skills through further
machine and tool operation and the introduction of systems of design.
Through the safe use of machines, power tools, hand tools and various
common materials and completion of a variety of projects this course will
focus on skill development in the woodwork area.
Electronics Technology
This subject builds on the skills learnt in Yr 9. Students will make their
own "Printed Circuit Boards" or PCB s for their projects and
will learn more about integrated circuits, digital electronics and radio.
A major part of the course will be project work where students will select
and design their own projects.
