Drama
Hampton Senior High School excels in Drama. A strong program is offered from Year Eight Specialist Drama to Year 12 Drama Studies. The school also boasts the tradition of a yearly musical, which is celebrated by students, parents and staff. The Performing Arts is embedded firmly in the culture of this school.
YEAR 8
Year Eight Specialist Drama provides students with the opportunity to
extend their skills, and also the freedom and confidence to express themselves
in a safe environment. Students learn fundamental skills such as movement,
voice, improvisation work, and effective teamwork. These basics provide
our students with the key to unlock and explore many issues that affect
the youth of today. Fourth Term allows students to select a unit they
wish to explore, promoting a sense of responsibility and choice within
our specialist students. Previous choices have been Musical Theatre and
Script-work, which have proved a great hit!
YEAR 9 - 10
Our year Nine and Ten program assists students with the practical and
theoretical knowledge they will require for year 11 and 12, while remaining
heavily performance and group-work based, proving an enjoyable experience
for many students. Students will learn, in a fun and practical way, about
different styles of theatre and theorists, and essential practical and
writing skills. Units such as Theatre History have been entwined with
stage combat and Information Communication Technology to further encourage
students to research. Design and Production roles are also taught in our
fully equipped theatre, containing a full lighting grid, sound board and
data projector facilities.
UPPER SCHOOL
Year 11 and 12 Drama and Drama Studies provides students with the opportunity
to further extend their skills. Our new Year 11 Course of Study offers
students exciting prospects such as theatre excursions, weekend “lock-downs”
and specialist direction from guest directors. Year 12 Drama Studies and
Drama provides students with a myriad of options, including theatre excursions,
play-building, script-work and group work. Students can choose to attend
many different classes and Specialist Tutorials, generally provided free
of charge; all of this is in addition to normal classes. Some of these
options are early morning Theatre History and Examination Preparation
units, Specialist Practical Examination tutorials and workshops hosted
by TEE examiners and one-on-one assistance for the TEE practical examination.
Hampton Senior High School also boasts the tradition of a yearly Musical Production. Students do not have to participate in Performing Arts based subjects to engage in this spectacle, though it is definitely helpful! The Musical is a showcase of our Specialist Drama, Gifted and Talented Dancers from the Gifted And Talented Education Dance program, as well as the fantastic Performing Arts flair that exists at Hampton Senior High School. Previous productions have included Guys and Dolls, Once on this Island and Singin’ in the Rain, and are always enjoyed by staff and students alike.
