Home Learning Areas Moodle

English

At Hampton SHS we have a strong focus on the development of reading skills, which we see as the heart of literacy. As such, students will study at least two novels and a range of short stories each year. We also actively encourage students to read widely at home. Personal reading, it could be argued, is the best form of English homework as it reinforces skills taught in the classroom and allows students to acquire high - level comprehending and thinking skills.

In addition to our focus on reading, the English Learning Area also focuses on the development of the associated literacy skills of viewing, writing, and speaking and listening. Units are balanced to ensure that students are immersed in these language skills and that they experience opportunities to have fun and be creative.

In Years 8 and 9 we teach skills that will enable students to succeed in the reading and comprehension tasks encountered in national testing. In Year 10 we prepare students for the more rigorous examination style assessment associated with Senior School.

In Senior School each course is directed towards the career path of students, whether this is through University, TAFE or employment. All students enrolled in stage 2 and stage 3 courses are required to sit examinations as part of their assessment.
