| Some subjects allow for students to dissect small amphibians and make informed comments on the soft, squishy bits within. Media Studies not only gives you the chance to do that with your favourite movie/TV show/video clip but you also get to make your own! Try making your own frog in biology class…. In every year, students are encouraged to critically view texts from a range of media forms such as film, television and mass print. Practical activities such as video production and animation allow students to demonstrate their creativity and understanding in an engaging and dynamic environment. In Years 8 to 10, students are introduced to the fundamental concepts of media analysis and production through studying comic books, advertising, Hollywood genre films, documentaries and TV series. Opportunities are provided for students to develop their skills and understanding in learning contexts that are not only interesting and enjoyable, but also relevant to their cultural activity. In Years 11 and 12, students are offered six semester units of the Media Production and Analysis course. In each unit, they will study media texts within a range of contexts such as entertainment, infotainment, popular culture, press and broadcasting, cult films and political propaganda. In addition to developing critical viewing and production skills, students will also investigate the influence of media on society and how society in turn affects the media. At the end of Year 12, an external examination is offered to any students seeking further studies at University. Doing Media Studies at Hampton is a bit like making pigs wrestle in jelly. It’s fun at the time, even if you’re not quite sure why you’re doing it, but it’s an experience that’ll last you a lifetime. |
