Hampton offers the Upper School SOSE, consisting of four different units to choose from:

History

Economics

Geography

Management and Marketing

History

Year 11

The following areas are studied in year 11:1. Nazi Germany
2. USA Between the WarsHistory is an interesting subject. Most people are curious about the past. The subject is especially useful in preparation for careers in: law, journalism, travel/tourism, media, teaching, museum work, librarianship and social work.

Students choosing History should be interested in people and have strong reading, writing and research skills. Modern history stresses the understanding of concepts, themes and the inquiry approach; it is not primarily concern with learning boring dates.

Year12

This is a discrete course and contains all the content examinable required in the TEE examination. Students will study two units:

Semester 1

AUSTRALIA 1900 -1945

The Experience of war and foreign affairs.
Lifestyles and culture
Boom and depression of the 1920's and 1930's.
Politics during the period.

Semester 2

Russion Revolution 1900- 1945

This is the copmrehensive study of Russia's & the USSR from 1900-1945. It explores the nature of revolution & the impact they have on society.

Pre-requisites Although desirable, it is not necessary for students to have studied History in Year 11 in order to do it in year 12.

Economics

Economics, like the law, affects almost every part of our lives. The study of Economics accordingly, helps us to understand the ways in which the working of an economy can and does affect us. Students undertaking this course will be introduced to relevant economic theory and the analytical techniques required to rationally interpret and evaluate economic problems and issues.Economics can be continued at Tertiary level as part of the Bachelor and Diploma courses in Economics, Commerce, Politics, Law and Education.The study of high school level Economics is also of benefit in assisting persons in their employment or private enterprise, rational decision making and the development of rational, logical thought processes. Year 11Semester OneFirst Semester deals with the Economic framework which looks at the nature of economics, the circular flow of income, the market economy, Australia's modified market economy and our major economic goals.Semester TwoSecond semester deals with three elective units from : Environmental Economics, Agricultural Economics, Australian Market Forms, Stockmarket, Economics of Labour, Australian A.S.E.A.N., Firms and Production and minerals and eneregy.

Pre-requisities: Desirable Social Studies Grade: A/B Grades in year 10 units.Year 12Students undertaking the Year 12 course will study the following topics:

1. Macro-Economic Theory
2. Government in the Economy
3. International Trade Pre-requisities: Students who have studied the Year 11 Economics course will find this useful for their study of the Year 12 course, although a study of the Year 11 course is not a pre-requisite for Year 12 Economics.

Geography

Students choosing to study Geography will be mainly concerned with people and their environment. Geography is a living subject where students study their environment, weather, forests, coasts, rivers and neighbouring countries.Students learn Geography by various methods, including the study of maps and photographs, videos, field trips and camps. Days trip to Point Peron, Mandura and MundaringGeography is an extremely interesting and useful subject, especially for those seeking careers in travel, tourism, journalism, recreation, town planning, architecture, meteorology, cartography, forestry and agriculture.Pre-requisits:Year 11
Desirable Social Studies Grades: pass in year 10 units.Year 12Students who have studied Geography at a Year 11 level will find the transition into Year 12 Geography a lot easier. Students who wish to pick Geography up at a Year 12 will need to be prepared to do a small bridging course to hone their mapping skills.

Management and Marketing

Year 11

This course of study is based upon a number of tasks that enable students to develop constructive skills positioning them as independent workers. There is a strong emphasis on the utilisation of learning technologies and teamwork skills. The transition from independent to team workers is developed and encouraged with real-life entrepreneurial tasks. It is a course of study that encompasses life-skills and it is strongly recommended as a pre-requisite for Year 12 Marketing and Management. There is much to be gained and enjoyed from a student-centred learning approach.

Year 12

The required outcomes for this subject are developed and demonstrated by students contributing towards an entrepreneurial task or project. Studies develop independent and interdependent teamwork skills enabling them to be valued members in a team environment.The course work has a strong emphasis on the integration of learning technologies.
