Science

Students learn to investigate, understand and communicate about the physical, biological and technological world and value the processes that support life on our planet. Science helps students to become critical thinkers by encouraging them to use evidence to evaluate the use of science in society and the application of science to daily life.

In 2008 some science classes are using the web based Moodle technology to engage in on-line learning. This allows them access to some curriculum resources from and to communicate with class mates to discuss current assessments ( or science homework or problem solve with assistance from their teacher.)

Another project undertaken by some science students in 2008 is the partnership with the Bunnings Morley store is the establishment of a wetland ecosystem. Watch this space for more information when completed.

Lower school

In Years 8 to 10 at Hampton Senior High School, students learn the process of Investigating Scientifically through planning, conducting, processing collected data and evaluating. These techniques are integrated into the four content strands of Earth and Beyond, Energy and Change, Life and Living, and Natural and Processed Materials, reflecting the traditional Science subjects of Geology and Astronomy, Physics, Biology and Chemistry. Students have the opportunity during each year to apply for a variety of competitions brought to their attention by their teachers and as displayed on the Science Department notice board.

Upper school

Students can choose from Chemistry, Human Biology and Physics or Senior Science. The university stream subjects are conducted over a period of two years, where the Year 11 courses provide essential background knowledge for the examinable content presented in Year 12. Students are expected to maintain a strong work ethic, including a commitment to home study, in order to complete these courses successfully.

The content of the Senior Science course for any academic year is negotiated between the students and teacher, depending on areas of interest and available resources. Popular content includes Forensic Science, Biotechnology, Marine Science, and Horticulture.

All upper school Science students are encouraged to participate in competitions, and the TEE students are referred to appropriate subject-based special events and revision seminars.

The Science Department currently has six specialist laboratories in operation, affording students access to gas, water and electrical utilities for conducting investigations. In addition, the Science Department has a Lecture Theatre with a two-class capacity to enhance the diversity of curriculum presentation. Science classes also use the school's ICT facilities to access complimentary web resources pertaining to their curriculum.
