Science Learning Area

A strong Science education is crucial in understanding and participating in our technological society. It opens doors to a wide range of worthwhile careers and teaches analytical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. We are proud of the curriculum we deliver which has a strong emphasis on experimentation, innovation and critical thinking as well as providing relevant scientific knowledge and understanding.

Innovative teaching

An enthusiastic and committed teaching team integrates well-stocked, modern laboratories, specialist equipment and a broad range of ICT resources with proven teaching strategies and learning materials. We ensure that student learning is facilitated through a variety of mediums and is always stimulating and rewarding. For the past two years the Hampton SHS Science Learning Area has been an approved Education department Teacher Development School (TDS), providing professional development and showcasing best practice to other science teachers around the state.

Lower School extension

To extend and engage year 7-10 students the Hampton Senior High School Science Learning Area is currently running an innovative and challenging program – the Applied Science Program (ASP). The purpose of ASP is to expose students to further education and careers in Science, develop communication skills and challenge them with experiments and projects in order to develop their curiosity and understanding of the world around them. This program allows students with an interest and aptitude for Science to excel and achieve beyond the scope of the regular Science syllabus. For further information on the Applied Science Program please click here.

Upper school choices

From 2016, Year 11 and 12 students can choose from a broad range of Science options, including General courses in Chemistry, Human Biology and Psychology as well as ATAR courses in Human Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology. Upper school students can access learning resources from the Science “Connect” webpage including subject specific programs, assessment outlines, links to videos, simulations and online tutorials as well as more traditional study materials such as worksheets and practice exams.

Primary School Connections

The Hampton SHS Science learning area is engaging year 5 and 6 students from our local primary schools with the “Bright Sparks” program. This Hampton designed program invites primary students from four local primary to the Hampton SHS Science Laboratories. The students are then given the opportunity to run exciting experiments relevant to their primary Science syllabus, using facilities not available in a primary school setting. Additionally it enables an easier transition into secondary school as students become familiar with our friendly staff and students.

Anyone wishing to find out more about any of our programs is encouraged to contact the Science department and speak to a Science learning area teacher.
